![]() ![]() There are several different options available when it comes to touring the house, and what you get out of the experience will likely depend on your interests surrounding the massive and unusual home. 5 through May 28, according to the attraction's official website. The house exists solely as a tourist attraction/museum, and tours are offered daily between the hours of 9 a.m. The sprawling estate is located in San Jose, California at 525 S Winchester Blvd., and it's most commonly known as the Winchester Mystery House. Good news: You can definitely visit the real Winchester House, and many people do since it's a popular tourist attraction, to the tune of over 12 million visitors since construction on the home ended with Sarah's death in 1922 (this number does not include possible ghosts). But can you visit the real Winchester House, and if so, will it be nearly as scary as in the movie? And although Mirren is a big star, the movie's true star is the house itself, which is based upon a real mansion in California. There's a lot in downtown but you can see other posts for that. The new horror film Winchester features Helen Mirren as Sarah Winchester, a seemingly unhinged widow and wealthy heiress to the Winchester Arms Company fortune, who builds a gigantic meandering mansion to appease the plethora of ghosts within its walls. (While you're looking up websites, check out what 3 Below is showing, they often have quirky shows in addition to being a fancyish place to see a movie.) The Tech also has an IMAX theater if you're into such things. Check out their websites to see if they appeal. We love going there anyway.Īnd if you are museum folks I think The Tech (science and technology) and San Jose's art museum (mostly modern art), both in downtown a short walk from each other (and only another mile or two from the Rose Garden) are wonderful in very different ways. the scholarship in the museum is a big dodgy, especially the planetarium show. ![]() Everything about the Winchester Mystery House goes for the Rosicrucian: really fun, interesting architecture, great gardens (and a meditation labyrinth), and lots of artifacts. ![]() Other folks have mentioned falafel drive in and the Rose Garden area/Rosicrucian Museum, which are less than two miles East. Book ahead for the special flashlight tours on Halloween and Friday the 13th, as these always sell out fast. Allot about one hour for the Mansion Tour and about two hours for the Explore More Tour. There is good architecture (in a faux European way) and it's just a very California experience. The Winchester Mystery House is open year-round, except for Christmas. I recommend doing a fairly early daytime tour, and then heading over to have lunch, walk the Row, and across into the mall. It's across the street from Santana Row and Valley Fair (outdoor shopping district and our largest indoor mall with a lot of high end stores). The Winchester Mystery House is really well located for a full day out. Featuring a garden of 1,500 plants and museums of historic firearms and antique products, this haunted estate is a thrilling destination. The gift shop alone is worth a visit, we don't have many places in San Jose where you can buy souvenirs. Very different though, since you can't see all the details in the same way. I've never done any of the spooky tours but friends who have seemed to enjoy them. If you enjoy old houses you'll really like all the details inside and out. But the regular mansion tour is usually quite good. Winchester Mystery House announced the return of their popular Flashlight Tours. It looks like unfortunately they aren't doing the behind the scenes tour I took with a relative pre-Covid, which was my very favorite (had to put on hard hats because we went into places that hadn't been refurbished).
